Student Fund Guidelines

Mission:  The student fund was established and is maintained by the Minnesota Executive Committee for the purpose of providing financial assistance to Student Chapters of the Minnesota Society of American Foresters participating in SAF sponsored, supported or endorsed events.

Distribution Guidance:  The student funds will be made available to Student Chapters of MN SAF or individual student members who have their Student Chapter endorsement following submission and review of an application for funding which includes a projected expense budget.  The fund will provide for up to 80% of the estimated costs.

Funding Level:  The Student Fund will be funded by the MN SAF Executive Council.  The level of funding may fluctuate from year to year.  Students may apply for any amount they wish, but preference will be given to applicants which demonstrate reasonably frugal planning.  The Executive Committee may approve an application at less than the full requested amount.

Application Process:  Application for funding is a competitive process.  All MN SAF Student Chapters are eligible to apply.  Funding is available to assist with attending local, national and regionally sponsored or endorsed SAF events.  Applications are accepted throughout the year, but applications must be made prior to the event (i.e., applications can not be made for reimbursements.) APPLICATIONS ARE DUE AT LEAST TWO MONTHS PRIOR TO THE EVENT FOR WHICH THE FUNDS WILL BE USED.  The Student Fund can be used to cover up to 80% of the projected expenses.  The application includes a maximum of two pages.  The first page provides basic contact information and the answers to a short set of questions.  The second page provides the expense budget.

Selection Process:  All applications will be reviewed by the MN SAF Executive Committee and voted on.  Applications receiving a majority endorsement will be awarded funding.  Priorities for funding include attendance at the National SAF meeting, the MN SAF Winter Meeting, and the MN SAF Summer Meeting.  Other events will be reviewed as well, but these three events are the highest priorities for funding.  Applicants will be notified by the Executive Committee if they have been awarded funding.  The Executive Committee may approve an application at less than the full requested amount.
