SOUTHERN CHAPTER

The Southern Chapter is made up of a diverse group of foresters and natural resource  professionals.
Members of the Southern Chapter are involved in their communities by offering their services to a variety
of projects, which include; Natural Resources in the Classroom (a project developed by the Southern
Chapter) ; Forests for Humanity; and Arbor Day Celebrations.

LAKE SUPERIOR CHAPTER

The Lake Superior Chapter has 119 members.

Current Projects:

  • The Lake Superior Chapter sponsors annual activities with the University of Minnesota and 
    Vermillion Community College forestry students. The cookout provides an informal opportunity for 
    students to network with foresters and other natural resource professionals. Contact the 
    Chapter Chair for upcoming meetings and locations.

  • Since 1984, the Lake Superior Chapter has sponsored the Duluth Area Schools Forestry Field 
    Day.  Area fifth graders participate in daylong field leaning experiences. Over forty foresters 
    and natural resource professionals contribute their time to teach nearly 1200 fifth graders 
    about forestry and other natural resource management topics.

HEADWATERS CHAPTER

Headwaters Chapter includes foresters from all facets of the profession, including students;educators at state universities, community colleges and extension services; public agency and industry practitioners and supervisors, consulting foresters, professionals in related natural resource fields, and retired members.

Members get together at continuing education seminars  and at tours and field days held throughout northwestern and northcentral Minnesota.  A Forestry Field Day gets Grand Rapids area fifth graders out of the classroom in the spring to learn from foresters.  The national 'Forests for Humanity' program was born in Headwaters Chapter, and that program and its affiliate, Habitat for Humanity, have many devoted participants here.

The Bemidji Natural Resource Consortium and the Headwaters Chapter continue a series of seminars and/or workshops in 2005.

UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA STUDENT CHAPTER

Founded in 1980 the student chapter consists of a group of about 20 active undergraduate and graduate 
students concerned and motivated by forestry issues. We bring in guest speakers and hold bi-weekly 
meetings to discuss organization activities as well as current topics in forestry.

Our recent activities include traveling to national and state conferences, participating in Forests 
for Humanity, Natural Resource in the Classroom, working with the MN DNR Forestry on red pine 
stand inventory projects, and many other volunteer activities.

VERMILION COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT CHAPTER

The forestry faculty at VCC in Ely, MN has established two memorial scholarships in honor of Bert Hoyer, a student in the college's natural resources technology program and an SAF student member, who was killed in March while serving with the US Army in Iraq. The scholarships currently offered are a $200 award toward the cost of tuition for a student engaged in a forestry-releated internship program and a $200 award toward the cost of tuition for a student transferring to a program at an SAF-accredited college or university offering a four-year forestry degree.
